Answers to common questions about the Backyard Discovery 16x10 Evanston Wall Mounted Louvered Pergola, including shade control, placement, and mounting considerations.
Quick answer
The 16x10 Evanston Wall Mounted Louvered Pergola offers adjustable shade with a wand-operated louvered roof and attaches directly to your house. This FAQ covers the most common placement and shade questions to help you decide if it's right for your space.
Why the Evanston's wall-mounted design matters
Unlike freestanding pergolas, the Evanston attaches directly to your house, which saves yard space and creates a seamless indoor-outdoor transition. This also means you need a solid, load-bearing exterior wall for installation.
The 16x10 size is generous for a wall-mounted pergola, providing ample coverage for a dining set or lounge area while keeping a compact footprint against your home.
Adjustable shade vs. fixed shade
The Evanston's louvered roof is its key feature. You can rotate the louvers from fully open to fully closed using the included wand, giving you control over sunlight and airflow. This is more versatile than a fixed roof or a standard pergola with no shade options.
However, the louvers do not block 100% of light when closed—some slivers of light may come through. For total blackout, you would need to add a separate shade solution like a canopy or curtains.
Frequently asked questions
- Can the Evanston pergola be mounted on any wall?
- It must be mounted to a solid, load-bearing exterior wall—typically wood or concrete. Drywall alone is not sufficient. Check your wall's construction and consult a professional if unsure. Verify your wall type before purchasing.
- How much shade does the louvered roof provide?
- When the louvers are fully closed, they block most direct sunlight but may still let in small slivers of light. For near-total shade, consider adding a shade cloth or canopy on top. Plan for additional shade if you need complete darkness.
- Is the 16x10 size big enough for a dining area?
- Yes, 16x10 feet provides enough coverage for a standard outdoor dining table with 6-8 chairs, plus some walking room. It is a popular size for wall-mounted pergolas. Measure your intended furniture to ensure a good fit.
- Does the pergola come with installation hardware?
- The pergola includes mounting brackets and hardware, but you will need to supply appropriate fasteners for your specific wall material (e.g., concrete anchors or wood screws). Have the right fasteners ready based on your wall type.
- Can I install the Evanston pergola myself?
- While the assembly is designed for DIY, the wall mounting step requires precise leveling and secure attachment. A two-person team with basic tools can handle it, but hiring a professional is recommended for the mounting portion. Consider professional help for the wall attachment.
